Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans

The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Controversies and Public Attention

The incident follows a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered significant criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in building the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, despite its recent championship drought.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their status or wealth.
