Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
