The Animated Series' Showrunner Reveals Alastor and Rosie's Backstory Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Devoted viewers of the show finally got a much-anticipated backstory in season 2's episode 4, called “It's a Deal.” This installment will probably spark extensive conversation and raise numerous questions about the essence of one particular demon Overlord who appears far more powerful than anyone previously understood. These fresh disclosures include a look into the human life of a beloved character before his demise and sentence to the underworld.
A Major Tease for Future Seasons
The series creator disclosed a secret about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a huge hint for the third season. She also offered more insight into the process of designing the mortal forms of her demonic cartoon figures.
Warning: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback reveals that fan-favorite personality Alastor the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Knowing full well he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the realm beyond in advance to secure a strong position there. Rosie, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.
This prompts the question: In what way is Rosie powerful enough to raise Alastor above every other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a larger narrative that involves a great deal, moving into the third season,” the showrunner states. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she that powerful? The solution could be many things, but the answer is in season 3. I'm very excited for people to witness it.”
There’s no telling how long viewers will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the creator often remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she states withholding on those details is an important part of maintaining the second season's focus in the right places.
“The difficulty of any agreement with demons, or stories that have enigmas, is giving the audience just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I'm very excited.”
Mysteries Resolved in Season 3
The creator promises that season 3 will tackle the queries fans have been asking, such as why Rosie ordered Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his power in the infernal realm.
“The whole seven years, and the deals these humans are doing, and all that — it's feeding into a larger story,” she says.
Meanwhile, the origin story episode provides another glimpse into how the main characters of Demonic Sinners appeared as as humans, following after viewing another character's Victorian-era human form in the second episode. The creator says that significant consideration was put into these character designs.
“The mortal forms of these personas carry so much weight,” she notes. “They range from looking really different from their demon form to looking almost identical. With the first character, the first one we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between choosing a design that represents the personality, as opposed to going with an option that's historically correct. We opted for making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘Nobody really had long hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we believe the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just felt he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he's a hermit, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there is always a solution. As we create the mortal forms of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and figure out. I am looking forward for fans to see more of what the human forms look like.”
